NC Equestrian History

Recently, there has been a great migration of horsemen to North Carolina from all over the U.S. Explanations have included the steady growth of horse numbers here, the state’s hospitality, the number of major shows within easy driving distance, the low cost of living, and climate.  All breeds and disciplines are represented in more than 500 horse events in several major complexes (Raleigh, Asheville, Tryon, Charlotte, Greensboro, Williamston, Pinehurst and Southern Pines).

In 1955 there were 61,000 horses in North Carolina, in 2004 that number more than tripled to an estimated 225,000.  According to the North Carolina Horse Council in 2007 there are more than 256,000 horses in North Carolina with the industry valued at more than $700 million annually. North Carolina has been ranked eighth among the states in the number of horses.

In 2008, North Carolina’s horse community will participate in a far-reaching study to assess the industry’s statewide economic impact and indentify opportunities for growth. The study seeks to be all-inclusive, taking in all breeds, the three large horsing sectors (showing, racing and recreation) and all associated activities.  The final report will be available January 2009.
